Why These Four Teeth Cause So Much Trouble

Wisdom teeth are holdovers from ancestors with roomier jaws and rougher diets. Modern jaws often lack the space, so third molars arrive crooked, partial, or trapped entirely beneath the gumline. A tooth that cannot fully erupt leaves a pocket where bacteria breed; a tooth angled forward leans on the molar in front of it; a fully impacted one sits in the bone, occasionally forming cysts. Quietly, any of them can cook for months before announcing itself.

That is why we track wisdom teeth on X-rays from the early teens forward inside our general dentistry program. Watching a badly positioned tooth gives you the luxury of choosing your moment, before the choosing is done for you at 2 AM. Extraction is one of the most frequent procedures in our oral surgery services.

Wisdom Teeth

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Are Making a Move

  • Ache or pressure blooming behind the last molars
  • Gums back there that are swollen, tender, or bleeding
  • Jaw stiffness, or trouble opening wide
  • Persistent bad breath or a foul taste from the area
  • Headaches or earaches tracing to one side

One escalation rule: severe swelling, fever, or any difficulty swallowing on top of jaw pain means infection that needs same-day attention. Walk-ins are welcome at our office, and our same-day emergency schedule exists exactly for mornings like that.

Extraction Day, Step by Step

Imaging comes first, mapping each root against the nerve below. Then, in the chair: local anesthesia plus your chosen sedation, a small opening if the tooth is impacted, sometimes sectioning the tooth so it lifts out in pieces rather than wrestling the whole thing at once, then cleaning and, when called for, dissolvable stitches.

Erupted teeth can take minutes apiece; impacted ones take longer. Either way, you are numb and settled before anything begins, and you hear what is coming before it comes. Patients who choose oral sedation usually report the whole event exists mostly as a fog and an ice pack.

Recovery, Done Right

  • Rest day one; skip workouts and heavy lifting for several days
  • Ice the jaw twenty minutes on, twenty off, to tame swelling
  • Soft foods first: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes
  • No straws, smoking, spitting, or hard rinsing for 72 hours
  • Warm salt water rinses starting a day after surgery
  • Pain medication taken exactly as directed

You leave with written instructions and our phone number, and recovery questions are answered by the same team that treated you. Something feels off on day four? Walk in or call 225-243-7704 and we will look.

Erupted, Partial, or Impacted: Why the Difference Matters

A fully erupted wisdom tooth extracts much like any molar, quickly and simply. A partially erupted one, half-shown beneath a gum flap, is the chronic infection site nobody wants. A fully impacted tooth never broke through at all and requires the surgical approach: opening the gum, a careful bit of bone work, often sectioning the tooth. Your X-rays tell us which situation you have, and the plan, timeline, and cost all follow from that.

Timing It Around a Teen’s Calendar

Families across Livingston Parish have learned to schedule wisdom tooth removal over summer or holiday breaks so recovery never costs a school day. Our Saturday hours make planning easy, and because the evaluation, the surgery, and every follow-up happen at one Juban Road address, there is no second office to learn. Costs are quoted in writing beforehand, most insurance is accepted, Medicaid for children is welcomed, and financing lives on our financial options page.

Why Denham Springs Families Keep It In-House

An in-house oral surgeon changes the whole experience: the dentist who spotted the problem and the surgeon removing it share records, hallway, and phone number. You will meet Dr. Mirzai at your consult, and directions and scheduling sit on our hours and locations page. And if a wisdom tooth erupts into crisis without warning, well, We’ll See You…Today!
